Everything You Need to Know for an Unforgettable Island Getaway
Elbow Cay is one of the most charming islands in the Abacos, a chain of islands and cays in The Bahamas that seem to have been made for island hopping. Known as the boating capital of The Bahamas, the Abacos are home to calm, crystal-clear water in every shade of blue imaginable, powdery white-sand beaches, colorful colonial settlements, and a relaxed pace that encourages you to slow down and explore.
What surprised me most about Elbow Cay is that, despite offering everything travelers dream about in a Caribbean getaway, it still feels like one of The Bahamas' best-kept secrets. Here, it's entirely possible to stroll down a picturesque dock without another person in sight, relax on a secluded beach, wander through charming Hope Town, and explore the island by golf cart discovering hidden corners that feel as if they've been waiting just for you.
Unlike destinations where the beaches are the only attraction, Elbow Cay offers plenty to explore both on the island and in the surrounding waters. One day you might be climbing the historic Hope Town Lighthouse, relaxing on a beautiful beach, or enjoying fresh seafood at a waterfront restaurant. The next, you could be hopping aboard a boat for a snorkeling excursion, swimming with sea turtles, or exploring neighboring cays. Nearby islands offer fantastic day trip adventures, including encounters with the famous swimming pigs and opportunities to discover vibrant coral reefs.
Whether you're planning a long weekend on Elbow Cay or using it as a base for exploring the surrounding Abaco Islands, this guide will help you discover the best of this laid-back Bahamian island. When I first started planning my visit, the logistics seemed a little daunting, but I soon discovered that getting there and exploring the island was easier than I expected and part of the adventure.
Let this guide take the guesswork out of planning your own getaway. From where to stay and how to get there to ferry and golf cart logistics, can't-miss experiences, local restaurants, nearby excursions, hidden gems, and practical travel tips, you'll find everything you need to plan an unforgettable trip including everything I wish I’d known before visiting.

🗺️ Elbow Cay Interactive Map
To make planning your trip easier, I've created an interactive map highlighting the best of Elbow Cay, along with nearby islands worth exploring. One of the biggest challenges when planning an Abacos vacation is understanding where everything is located and how the islands connect. This map will help you visualize Elbow Cay's main attractions, see where neighboring cays are located, plan your ferry routes, and get a better sense of travel distances as you plan your stay.

❤️ Why You'll Love Elbow Cay & Hope Town, Bahamas
There are plenty of beautiful beaches throughout the Caribbean, but Elbow Cay offers something that's becoming increasingly rare—a chance to truly slow down and experience island life at its own pace.
You'll fall in love with the crystal-clear turquoise water, colorful cottages lining the charming streets of Hope Town, and friendly locals who make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. Whether you're cruising across the Sea of Abaco by ferry, exploring the island by golf cart, climbing the historic Hope Town Lighthouse, or enjoying fresh seafood with a waterfront view, the journey is just as memorable as the destination.
Unlike the busier tourist areas of The Bahamas, Elbow Cay feels refreshingly uncrowded. You'll find quiet stretches of beach, picturesque docks overlooking impossibly blue water, and hidden corners of the island that feel like your own private paradise. There's no need to fill every hour with activities. Sometimes the best moments are the ones spent simply enjoying the view.
And while Elbow Cay is a wonderful destination on its own, its location in the Abacos also makes it a great base for boating adventures, snorkeling excursions, swimming with sea turtles and the Abacos pigs, bonefishing, and exploring nearby cays.
If you're looking for a destination that's perfect for relaxing, island hopping, exploring at your own pace, and experiencing a more laid-back side of The Bahamas, Elbow Cay is hard to beat.
Planning Your Trip to Elbow Cay
🏨 Where to Stay in Miami Before Visiting Elbow Cay
If you're planning a trip to Elbow Cay, I highly recommend flying through Miami International Airport (MIA) and spending a night in Miami Beach before continuing to The Bahamas. Marsh Harbour has limited flight options, and depending on where you're traveling from, coordinating your connecting flights can be tricky. Rather than stressing over a tight connection or risking a missed flight, why not turn that overnight layover into a little vacation of its own?
That’s exactly what I did! Instead of rushing to catch a connecting flight, I arrived in Miami a day early and stayed at The Palms Hotel & Spa which let me ease into island time before even reaching The Bahamas.
The Palms is a beautiful beachfront resort right in the heart of Miami Beach surrounded by lush tropical gardens, swaying palms and ocean views. It's a wonderful place to spend the night, unwind after your flight and slip into vacation mode before you even reach Elbow Cay. Think cocktails by the pool, toes in the sand, a leisurely dinner at Essensia Restaurant and morning coffee with an ocean breeze. Rather than spending your layover sitting in an airport hotel, give yourself a little time to enjoy Miami Beach before the adventure begins.
☀️ When Is the Best Time to Visit Elbow Cay?
Elbow Cay is a beautiful destination year-round, with warm temperatures, turquoise waters and plenty of sunshine. However, the time of year you visit can make a big difference, especially if you're hoping to spend your days boating, snorkeling, fishing or exploring nearby islands.
November through April is generally the best time to visit Elbow Cay, when the weather is typically drier, temperatures are comfortable and humidity is lower. It's an ideal time for exploring Hope Town, relaxing on the beach and enjoying outdoor activities. Keep in mind that winter cold fronts can occasionally bring strong winds and rough seas, even during the dry season.
May and early June can be a wonderful alternative, with warmer water, fewer crowds and potentially better accommodation rates. You'll experience more heat and humidity, along with an increasing chance of rain as summer approaches.
July through October brings hot, humid weather and a greater chance of tropical storms. While you'll still find beautiful sunny days, this is also a time when weather can interfere with boating excursions, ferry transportation and other outdoor activities. The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November.
I visited Elbow Cay in late October and experienced firsthand just how much the weather can affect your plans. Although I had snorkeling and bonefishing excursions arranged, both were canceled due to weather conditions. But here's what surprised me: I still enjoyed beautiful weather throughout my entire stay!
Elbow Cay sits along the sheltered Sea of Abaco, with protected waters and coves that can offer calmer conditions even when winds and rough seas make excursions to neighboring islands difficult. While the weather prevented me from venturing farther out, it didn't stop me from enjoying sunny days, beautiful beaches, exploring Hope Town, and climbing its historic lighthouse. It's a good reminder that unfavorable boating conditions don't necessarily mean your island getaway will be a washout.
✨ Pro Tip: If boating, snorkeling or fishing excursions are high on your priority list, schedule them early in your stay. That way, if weather forces a cancellation, you may have an opportunity to still reschedule. I also recommend leaving some flexibility in your itinerary rather than planning every day around excursions.
⚓ Things to Know Before You Go
A little planning goes a long way in the Abaco Islands. From ferry schedules to packing the right gear, these tips will help you make the most of your trip and avoid a few common surprises.
📘 Passport - A valid passport is required for U.S. citizens traveling to the Bahamas. Be sure to check the expiration date well before your trip, as some airlines may require several months of validity beyond your travel dates.
💵 Bring Some Cash - While many hotels, restaurants, and businesses accept credit cards, some smaller shops, taxis, ferry operators, and local vendors may prefer cash. Having a small amount on hand is always a good idea.
🚗 Driving & Navigation – In the Bahamas, you drive on the left side of the road, including when exploring Elbow Cay by golf cart. Street signs are limited, so navigating can take a little getting used to. Fortunately, Google Maps worked well during my visit and made getting around much easier.
🛥️ Plan Ahead for Ferries & Boat Charters – Scheduled ferries generally don't require advance reservations. However, it's important to check ferry schedules and departure locations ahead of time. For private boat charters, snorkeling trips, and guided fishing excursions, I recommend making arrangements in advance, especially during peak travel seasons. Keep in mind that boat excursions are weather-dependent, so build some flexibility into your itinerary.
🌦️ Keep an Eye on the Weather - Weather can change quickly on the water. Even on sunny days, strong winds may affect ferry schedules, boat charters, snorkeling conditions, and other water activities.
🏝️ Embrace Island Time – Life moves at a slower pace in The Bahamas. And I mean a shockingly slower pace! Don't expect anyone to be in a hurry. Relax, be flexible, and embrace the laid-back atmosphere. It's honestly one of the best parts of visiting Elbow Cay and a big part of its charm.
🧳 What to Pack:
🧴 Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Pack reef-safe sunscreen to help protect the Bahamas' fragile marine ecosystem.
🎒 Bring a dry bag for boat excursions to keep your phone, camera, and valuables protected.
🩴 Water shoes are helpful for rocky shorelines, snorkeling, and exploring tidal areas.
🕶️ Polarized Sunglasses: Not just for comfort, polarized glasses cut glare on the water, making it much easier to spot sea turtles, rays, fish, and coral beneath the surface.
🔋 Portable Charger: Between taking photos, navigating with maps, and checking ferry schedules, you’ll be glad you brought one.
✈️ How to Get to and Around Elbow Cay, Bahamas
Getting to Elbow Cay requires a little more planning than visiting some other Bahamian islands, but don't let the logistics intimidate you! When I first started planning my trip, figuring out the flights, ferry schedules and transportation between islands seemed extremely overwhelming. However, once I arrived, I discovered that getting to Elbow Cay was much easier than I expected and I cannot wait to go back.
There are no commercial flights directly to Elbow Cay, so you'll fly into Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco Island. Once you arrive, you’ll continue by taxi to the ferry dock which will take you to the island.
✈️ Flying to Marsh Harbour from Miami or Atlanta
Flights from Miami (MIA)
Miami International Airport is my recommended gateway to the Abacos, particularly for travelers coming from the United States. American Airlines offers nonstop flights between Miami and Marsh Harbour, making it a convenient connection for reaching Elbow Cay.
Flights from Atlanta (ATL)
Atlanta is another gateway worth exploring. Delta offers seasonal nonstop service between Atlanta and Marsh Harbour. Compare both routes when booking, especially if one offers a more convenient arrival time.
🛬 Arriving at Marsh Harbour Airport (MHH)
You'll arrive at Leonard M. Thompson International Airport (MHH) on Great Abaco Island.
The airport is relatively small, and the arrival process is pretty straightforward. However, allow some flexibility in your schedule for longer immigration and customs lines, especially if you're arriving during a busy travel period.
🚕 Getting from Marsh Harbour Airport to the Ferry Dock
After clearing immigration and customs and collecting your luggage, you'll need a taxi to the ferry dock for Elbow Cay.
My Taxi Driver Recommendation: Christopher N. Smith, Taxi 135
📱 WhatsApp: +1 (242) 577-0067
📧 Email: cnsmith61@gmail.com
Although I had absolutely no issues finding a taxi at the airport, I highly recommend arranging your transportation in advance with Chris. He actually happened to be the driver waiting at the curb when I arrived, and I'm so glad I found him!
Chris was incredibly helpful throughout our visit. He can take you to a grocery store or local liquor store to stock up on provisions before catching the ferry to Elbow Cay, which is especially convenient if you're staying somewhere with a kitchen, and can help with return transportation on your departure date.
When I mentioned that my sister would be arriving on a separate flight later that afternoon, he offered to pick her up, too. Not only did he track her flight, but he even made a little sign with her name on it and was waiting when she arrived!
He was just as wonderful when it came time to leave. He called me the day before our departure, helped us figure out which ferry to take based on our flight times, and tracked both of our flights to make sure everything was running on schedule. He was there early, waiting with a smile, and made the entire process extremely easy.
Having someone reliable who knows the ferry schedules, monitors your flights, and genuinely looks out for you takes so much of the stress out of traveling between Marsh Harbour and Elbow Cay. I wouldn't hesitate to use Chris again!
⛴️ Taking the Ferry to Elbow Cay
From Marsh Harbour, you'll take a passenger ferry to Elbow Cay. The boat ride across the Sea of Abaco is part of the adventure, with beautiful turquoise water and views of the surrounding islands. I absolutely loved it!
There are several scheduled departures throughout the day and you won’t need to make reservations for these regularly scheduled ferry runs. Simply arrive at the dock, purchase your ticket, and board the next available ferry. You can check the current schedule and fares online at G and L Transportation. You can also purchase drinks, beer, and snacks at the dock while you wait for your ferry.
One thing I really appreciated was how helpful the ferry crew was. They assisted with luggage and made sure I knew exactly where to get off. I simply told them I was staying at Abaco Inn, and they took care of the rest. There was no need to worry about figuring out which stop was mine!
If you're staying at Abaco Inn, ask the ferry crew to radio ahead and let the hotel know you're on your way. Abaco Inn will arrange to have a driver waiting to pick you up and take you to the property. It made arriving on the island incredibly easy.
✨ Pro Tip: Purchase a round-trip ferry ticket rather than two one-way fares to save money. You’ll receive a small token that looks like a poker chip to use for your return trip. Keep it somewhere safe! I didn't notice anywhere to purchase a return ticket at our departure stop at Hope Town, so I was especially glad I did this.
✨ Pro Tip for Return Ferry Trip: Depending on your flight time, you may need to catch an early ferry back to Marsh Harbour that leaves you with quite a bit of extra time before your flight. You can grab lunch in town, but keep in mind that many restaurants are closed on Sundays. If you're heading straight to the airport, Candie's Snack Place Restaurant is located inside the airport, open on Sundays, and the food is surprisingly good! We ate breakfast there and were pleasantly surprised.
🛺 Getting Around Elbow Cay
Golf Cart Rentals:
Once you're on Elbow Cay, golf carts are the most convenient way to explore the island. Although Hope Town itself is wonderfully walkable, with narrow streets, colorful cottages, waterfront restaurants and shops, a golf cart gives you the freedom to explore beaches, restaurants and other attractions outside of town.
I rented a golf cart from Vickie and Gerald Sweeting at Hope Town Cart Rentals, and they were fantastic! Their prices were reasonable, and they delivered the cart directly to me at Abaco Inn and picked it up when my stay was over. I didn't have to worry about a thing!
Hope Town Cart Rentals
🌐 Reservations: hopetowncartrental.com
📧 Email: hopetowncartrentals@yahoo.com
A few things to know about driving a golf cart on Elbow Cay: You'll drive on the left side of the road, just as you would elsewhere in The Bahamas. Rental golf carts are slow-moving, with speeds generally limited to around 10 mph, but that's part of the charm! You're on island time, after all.
✨ Pro Tip: Don't plan on using your golf cart to transport luggage from the ferry dock. Golf carts have weight and passenger restrictions, and hauling suitcases can be difficult. If you're staying at Abaco Inn, arrange for the hotel to pick you up at the ferry dock and take you and your luggage to the property. Have your rental golf cart delivered directly to the hotel instead. It's so much easier, and you can start exploring once you're settled in!
🚲 Bicycle & Boat Rentals:
If you prefer exploring on two wheels, bicycles are also available to rent on Elbow Cay. Check out The Bike Shop in Hope Town or A&S Bikes & Paddleboards. For those comfortable navigating the water, renting a boat is another great option for exploring secluded beaches and neighboring cays. Local companies such as Cat's Paw and Island Marine offer boat rentals, although availability and weather conditions should be considered when planning.
🏨 Choosing Where to Stay on Elbow Cay
One of the best things about Elbow Cay is that you can choose between staying in the heart of charming Hope Town or enjoying a quieter beachfront escape just a short golf cart ride away. The island is small enough that you can easily explore both, so choosing where to stay really comes down to the type of vacation you're looking for.
⭐ Hope Town – Best for Walkability & Island Charm
If you love colorful cottages, picturesque streets, boutique shops, and waterfront restaurants, Hope Town is a wonderful place to stay. This historic settlement is home to the iconic candy-striped Hope Town Lighthouse and has a charming, laid-back atmosphere that's easy to fall in love with. It's especially appealing if you prefer exploring on foot and having restaurants and shops nearby.
🌴 White Sound & Southern Elbow Cay – Best for Beaches & Relaxation
If you're looking for a quieter setting with beautiful water views, easy beach access, and a more relaxed resort atmosphere, consider staying farther south on Elbow Cay. You'll still be just a golf cart ride from Hope Town, but you'll have a peaceful place to unwind after a day of exploring.
⭐ My Pick: Best Place to Stay on Elbow Cay
🏨 Abaco Inn | Elbow Cay, Bahamas
If you're looking for the perfect combination of comfort, location, and authentic island charm, I highly recommend Abaco Inn on Elbow Cay. Located in the White Sound area, just a short golf cart ride from Hope Town, this beautiful oceanfront property offers stunning views, gorgeous beaches, a swimming pool, and a laid-back atmosphere that makes it easy to settle into island life.
One of the things that makes Abaco Inn so special is its incredible location. The property stretches between the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the calmer Sea of Abaco on the other, giving guests two completely different coastal experiences just steps apart.
On the Atlantic side, you'll find crashing waves, beautiful ocean views, and a beach where you can enjoy the dramatic scenery. Walk over to the Sea of Abaco side just a stone’s throw away, and the atmosphere changes entirely, with calm turquoise water, soft white sand, and docks overlooking the protected waters. It really is the best of both worlds!
Accommodations include charming guest rooms, villas, and oceanfront cottages, giving travelers several options depending on their group size and the type of stay they're looking for. Whether you're planning a romantic getaway, a trip with friends, or a family vacation, there's something appealing about having your own little slice of island paradise.
What I also loved about staying here was just how easy it was to enjoy the island without feeling like I needed to be constantly on the go. Between exploring Hope Town, relaxing by the pool, and enjoying fresh seafood and tropical cocktails at the waterfront restaurant and bar, my days quickly settled into that wonderfully slow Bahamian pace.
In fact, even though weather conditions forced the cancellation of our planned snorkeling and bonefishing excursions, I never felt like I was missing out. With beautiful beaches on both sides of the property, gorgeous ocean views, and plenty of places to unwind, Abaco Inn was a destination in itself, and my favorite moments of the trip were simply relaxing and taking in the surroundings.
The inn also made exploring Elbow Cay incredibly convenient. When we arrived by ferry, the crew radioed ahead, and a driver from Abaco Inn met us at the dock to take us to the property. I also arranged for our rental golf cart to be delivered directly to us at the hotel, so we could come and go whenever we wanted without worrying about transportation.
Whether you're planning to spend your days exploring Elbow Cay and the surrounding islands or simply want a beautiful place to slow down and enjoy the Bahamas, Abaco Inn makes a wonderful home base!
Best Things to Do on Elbow Cay & Nearby Abaco Islands
From climbing a historic lighthouse and exploring colorful island streets to relaxing on beautiful beaches and discovering neighboring cays, there's no shortage of things to do on Elbow Cay. Whether you prefer leisurely days exploring by golf cart or adventures on the water, this little corner of The Bahamas has something for everyone.
🚨 Climb the Historic Hope Town Lighthouse
One of the most iconic landmarks in the Abacos, the red-and-white striped Hope Town Lighthouse (officially Elbow Reef Lighthouse) is an absolute must-see when visiting Elbow Cay. Built in the 1860s, it's one of the last remaining manually operated, kerosene-burning lighthouses in the world.
Getting there is part of the adventure! The lighthouse sits across the harbor from Hope Town, so you'll need to take a short boat ride to reach it. Once across, it's an easy walk through the boatyard to the lighthouse, where you'll also find a little gift shop.
Then comes the fun part! Climb 101 steps up the narrow spiral staircase and squeeze through a small hatch to reach the observation deck.
Your reward? Absolutely breathtaking panoramic views of Hope Town, its picturesque harbor, the surrounding islands, and turquoise water stretching as far as the eye can see. Trust me, the view is worth every step!
✨ Pro Tip: Getting across the harbor to the lighthouse was a little confusing at first. We were told there was a phone number posted near the dock by the post office to arrange a ride, but we never did find it and almost gave up!
Thankfully, the water taxi driver from Hope Town Inn & Marina offered us a ride, and we tipped him for his help. We enjoyed lunch at the marina, then took the short, easy walk through the boatyard to the lighthouse.
My recommendation: Plan lunch at Hope Town Inn & Marina and arrange to use their water taxi service. Simply call them at +1 (242) 803-4401 for a pick-up (the phone number is also posted at the dock). As we discovered, getting there was actually super easy once we asked for help. The locals were incredibly friendly, and I'm so glad we didn't miss one of the best views on the island!
🚲 Explore the Colorful Streets of Hope Town
Hope Town is one of those places that seems almost too picturesque to be real. Think narrow streets lined with colorful cottages, tropical flowers, charming boutiques, and waterfront restaurants overlooking a harbor filled with boats.
The historic settlement is best explored on foot or by bicycle, allowing you to wander at your own pace, browse the shops, stop for a cold drink, and discover little corners of town you might otherwise miss. Don't rush this one. Part of Hope Town's charm is simply enjoying the atmosphere.
✨ Pro Tip: Golf carts aren't allowed in historic Hope Town without a special permit, so plan to explore the village on foot or by bicycle. Park your cart outside the restricted area and enjoy wandering town. It's part of what makes Hope Town so charming!
Discover Hope Town's History at the Wyannie Malone Museum
Tucked into historic Hope Town near the Post Office Dock, the Wyannie Malone Historical Museum offers a glimpse into the island's fascinating past. Named after one of Hope Town's original settlers, the museum preserves photographs, artifacts and stories of the island's early residents, shipwrecks, pirates and maritime history.
✨ Pro Tip: The museum has been undergoing repairs, so check its reopening status before planning a visit. Unfortunately, it was not open when I was there.
🛺 Discover Elbow Cay by Golf Cart
My favorite, and the easiest, way to explore Elbow Cay was by golf cart. With the wind in your hair (well, sort of as the rentals barely go over 10 m.p.h.) and beautiful water views around seemingly every corner, even getting from one place to another becomes part of the fun.
Renting a golf cart gives you the freedom to explore beyond Hope Town, visit beaches, stop at waterfront restaurants, and discover the quieter parts of the island. Just remember to drive on the left side of the road and embrace the slower pace. You're on island time!
🏖️ Relax on Tahiti Beach or Elbow Cay's Other Beautiful Beaches
You don't have to venture to another island to find beautiful beaches. Elbow Cay has gorgeous stretches of sand, from the Atlantic-facing shoreline with its rolling waves to the calmer turquoise waters along the Sea of Abaco.
One beach worth seeking out is Tahiti Beach at the southern end of the island, known for its shallow water, palm-fringed shoreline, and sandbar that becomes especially beautiful at low tide. With its west-facing views, it's also a lovely spot to watch the sunset.
Whether you're looking for a peaceful place to relax or a beautiful spot for photos, there's no shortage of coastal scenery to enjoy.
Explore the Water by Kayak or Paddleboard
You don't need a boat to get out on the beautiful turquoise water surrounding Elbow Cay. Renting a kayak or stand-up paddleboard is a fun way to explore the shoreline at your own pace, especially on the calmer Sea of Abaco side of the island.
If you're staying at Abaco Inn, look for the kayaks on the beach facing the Sea of Abaco. We spotted several available for rent, with a phone number posted to arrange rentals.
Another option is A&S Bikes & Paddleboards in Hope Town, which offers paddleboard rentals. You can contact them at (242) 823-9420 or asbicyclerentals@yahoo.com to check availability and make arrangements.
✨ Pro Tip: Check the wind and water conditions before heading out. The Sea of Abaco side is generally more sheltered than the Atlantic-facing beaches.
🍹 Enjoy a Waterfront Restaurant or Beach Bar
Few things capture the spirit of the Abacos quite like enjoying a tropical cocktail with a beautiful ocean view.
Elbow Cay has several wonderful waterfront restaurants and laid-back bars where you can enjoy fresh seafood, cold drinks, and that wonderfully unhurried island atmosphere. One spot worth checking out is On Da Beach, a casual beachfront bar and grill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Whether you're stopping for lunch during a golf cart adventure or settling in for dinner overlooking the water, be sure to leave time to enjoy the island's dining scene.
🌅 Take a Sunset Cruise
There's something special about watching the sun dip toward the horizon while surrounded by the beautiful waters of the Abacos.
A sunset cruise is a wonderful way to end a day on Elbow Cay, whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for a relaxing evening on the water. Depending on the operator, you may be able to arrange a private charter or join a small-group outing.
With beautiful harbor views, neighboring cays, and the possibility of a spectacular Bahamian sunset, it's an experience worth considering if the weather cooperates.
🚤 Explore the Abacos on an Island-Hopping Excursion
Elbow Cay makes a wonderful base for exploring the surrounding Abaco Islands, and one of the most popular ways to experience them is by private boat charter or guided island-hopping excursion.
Depending on your interests and the weather, you can visit neighboring destinations such as Man-O-War Cay, Great Guana Cay, Green Turtle Cay, No Name Cay, and Manjack Cay. Some excursions combine multiple experiences into one day, including snorkeling, swimming with sea turtles, visiting the famous swimming pigs, relaxing on secluded beaches, and stopping for lunch at a waterfront restaurant.
Although weather prevented me from taking the excursions I'd planned during my visit, these are wonderful options to consider if you're hoping to explore beyond Elbow Cay.
🐷 Visit the Swimming Pigs at No Name Cay
You don't have to travel all the way to Exuma to see the famous swimming pigs of The Bahamas! The Abacos have their own swimming pigs at No Name Cay, a small island near Green Turtle Cay.
Often referred to as Piggyville, this beautiful little cay is home to pigs that wander the beach and sometimes venture into the shallow turquoise water. Compared with the better-known swimming pig excursions in Exuma, No Name Cay can offer a quieter experience.
✨ Pro Tip: While you're there, consider stopping at Big O's Swimming Pigs Bar & Restaurant for lunch and a tropical drink.
🐢 Swim With Wild Sea Turtles
One of the most memorable experiences you can arrange in the Abacos is an opportunity to see sea turtles swimming freely in their natural habitat.
The waters around Green Turtle Cay and Manjack Cay are popular areas for wildlife-focused boat excursions, and some local guides know spots where turtles are frequently seen. Depending on conditions, you may have the opportunity to snorkel nearby or simply watch them glide through the clear water from your boat.
I was extremely disappointed that weather prevented me from taking an excursion to see them when I was there but at least I have a good excuse to go back!
🤿 Snorkel the Reefs Around the Abacos
With clear turquoise water, coral reefs, tropical fish, and fascinating underwater scenery, the Abacos are a wonderful destination for snorkeling.
Guided excursions can take you to reefs and other snorkeling sites around Elbow Cay and neighboring islands, where you may encounter colorful fish, sea fans, rays, and occasionally sea turtles. Some operators also visit shipwreck sites if conditions and experience levels allow it.
✨ Pro Tip: If snorkeling is high on your wish list, book an excursion early in your stay so you'll have some flexibility if wind or rough seas interfere with your plans.
🎣 Try Bonefishing or Book a Fishing Charter
The Abacos are well known for some of the world’s best fishing opportunities, from bonefishing on shallow flats to offshore charters targeting larger game fish.
Bonefishing is especially fascinating because it involves spotting and casting to fish in shallow, clear water. It's a completely different experience from traditional deep-sea fishing and a great adventure for anyone interested in learning more about fly fishing.
I had a guided bonefishing excursion arranged during my visit and even brought my brand new saltwater travel rod and reel from Pescador on the Fly, but unfortunately, weather conditions forced its cancellation. It's still high on my list for a return trip!
Best Restaurants & Beach Bars
Elbow Cay may be small, but there's no shortage of wonderful places to eat and enjoy a tropical cocktail. From casual beach bars overlooking the Atlantic to waterfront restaurants with spectacular sunset views, dining is part of the island experience. Here are six spots worth adding to your itinerary.
🌊 Abaco Inn Restaurant & Bar — Ocean Views & Island Dining
Located in White Sound, Abaco Inn is one of those places where the setting is just as memorable as the meal. Its waterfront restaurant serves fresh seafood, Caribbean-inspired dishes, and tropical cocktails, with beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean. And the grouper? Fantastic! I'm not even a big fan of fish, yet I loved it so much I ordered it two nights in a row!
During my stay at Abaco Inn, I loved being able to enjoy a leisurely meal or cocktail without leaving the property. The atmosphere strikes that perfect balance between casual island living and a special night out. Even if you're staying elsewhere on Elbow Cay, it's worth stopping by for a meal and the incredible scenery.
✨ Pro Tip: Restaurants on Elbow Cay may operate on seasonal schedules, particularly during the quieter fall months. Check current opening hours before heading out.
🍹 On Da Beach Bar & Grill — Casual Beach Bar
If there's one beach bar you shouldn't miss on Elbow Cay, it's On Da Beach! Located near Turtle Hill, this laid-back, open-air restaurant has some of the most stunning Atlantic Ocean views on the island. I couldn't get over the color of the water! Somehow, the turquoise blues were even brighter and more vibrant here than anywhere else we visited on Elbow Cay.
The atmosphere is just as wonderful as the scenery. There are games to play, plenty of places to relax with a tropical cocktail, and you can wander right down to the sand to enjoy the beach.
The menu features fresh seafood, burgers, and casual island favorites, making it a perfect stop while exploring the island by golf cart. I absolutely loved this place. It's somewhere I'd happily spend an entire afternoon and did!
✨ Pro Tip: Don't leave On Da Beach without checking out the liquor store next door, Turtle Nest Cellars, where you'll find a seriously impressive collection of rare wines and premium high-end bourbons.
But the real surprise is The Apollo, a spacecraft-style capsule that's been transformed into a luxurious private wine-tasting room! You can even reserve it for an exclusive tasting with champagne and charcuterie. The experience starts at $500 for two hours, accommodates up to eight guests, and requires at least 48 hours' notice. Email Kate@TurtleHill.com for reservations. Definitely one of the most unexpected discoveries on Elbow Cay!
🍹 Hope Town Inn & Marina — Harborfront Dining Near the Lighthouse
Located across Hope Town Harbour near the lighthouse, Hope Town Inn & Marina is a little slice of island paradise! Its restaurant, Bridget's Rum Bar & Restaurant, serves Bahamian and American favorites, fresh seafood, and tropical cocktails in a beautiful waterfront setting.
We stopped here for lunch during our lighthouse adventure, and I absolutely loved it! Between the gorgeous harbor views, relaxed atmosphere, and boats coming and going, it's the kind of place that makes you want to linger a little longer.
Getting there is part of the fun, too! The marina operates a water taxi from the dock near the Hope Town post office, taking you right across the harbor to the property. Frequently Asked Questions
Which airport do you fly into to visit Elbow Cay?
Fly into Leonard M. Thompson International Airport (MHH) in Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco Island. Once you arrive, you'll take a taxi to the ferry dock, then catch a passenger ferry to Elbow Cay. Miami is a convenient gateway, and I recommend allowing plenty of time for connections or spending a night in Miami Beach before continuing to the Abacos.
How many days should you spend on Elbow Cay?
I recommend at least three full days to explore Hope Town, climb the lighthouse, visit the beaches, and enjoy the island's restaurants. Four or five days would be even better if you're planning snorkeling, fishing, or island-hopping excursions. Boat trips are weather-dependent, so having extra days also gives you some flexibility.
Is Elbow Cay expensive?
Elbow Cay can be a relatively expensive destination, particularly when you factor in flights, accommodations, ferry transportation, and boat excursions. However, you can balance your budget by mixing casual waterfront dining with beach days, exploring Hope Town on foot, and choosing accommodations that suit your travel style. Private boat charters will likely be one of your larger expenses.
Do you need a golf cart on Elbow Cay?
Not necessarily! If you're staying in historic Hope Town, you can explore much of the village on foot. However, I highly recommend renting a golf cart if you want to discover the rest of Elbow Cay, visit different beaches, and enjoy restaurants farther south. Golf carts aren't permitted in the historic settlement of Hope Town without a special permit, so plan to park outside the restricted area.
Can you visit Elbow Cay on a day trip?
Yes! You can take a ferry from Marsh Harbour to Hope Town and spend the day exploring the village, visiting the lighthouse, shopping, and enjoying a waterfront lunch. Just check the return ferry schedule before you go. Personally, I'd recommend staying overnight if possible. There's something special about enjoying the island after the day visitors have left. We met a couple staying on Marsh Harbour visiting for the day and I think they were a little disappointed they weren’t staying longer.
Can you island hop from Elbow Cay without renting a boat?
Yes, although your options depend on where you want to go. Scheduled ferries connect certain islands and settlements, while guided excursions and private charters offer more flexibility for visiting remote cays, snorkeling spots, and wildlife attractions like sea turtles and the Abacos pigs. If you want to combine several islands in one day, a guided boat excursion is usually the easiest option.
Can you see swimming pigs and sea turtles near Elbow Cay?
Yes! The famous swimming pigs at No Name Cay and wild sea turtles around Manjack Cay and Green Turtle Cay are popular attractions in the Abacos. These experiences generally require a boat excursion from Elbow Cay, and some charter excursions combine both attractions with snorkeling and other island stops.
Can you drink the tap water on Elbow Cay?
Water quality depends on where you're staying. Elbow Cay doesn't have a centralized public water system, and many properties rely on cisterns and collected rainwater. Ask your hotel or vacation rental whether its water is safe to drink. Bottled or properly filtered water is a good option if you're unsure. We drank the water at Abaco Inn and had no issues.
Is Elbow Cay safe for tourists?
Elbow Cay has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, and I found the locals incredibly friendly and helpful. I never felt unsafe and had no problems. Of course, with any destination, use common sense, secure your belongings, and pay attention to weather and water conditions. If you're planning excursions, choose reputable operators and avoid heading out when conditions are unsafe.
What currency is used on Elbow Cay?
The official currency is the Bahamian dollar, which is equal in value to the U.S. dollar. U.S. dollars are widely accepted, so there's absolutely no need to exchange money before your trip. Many restaurants and businesses accept credit cards, but I recommend bringing some cash for ferry tickets, tips, small purchases, and unexpected expenses.
Do you need a passport to visit Elbow Cay?
Yes. U.S. citizens traveling by air need a valid passport to enter The Bahamas and return to the United States. For a short tourist visit, U.S. citizens generally don't need a visa, but you should have a return or onward ticket. Always check current entry requirements before traveling.
