From dining barefoot in the sand on Sunset Key to watching the sun disappear over Key West Harbor, waterfront dining is one of those experiences I think everyone should have at least once while visiting Key West.

No matter where you choose to eat, a little planning can make dining in Key West even better. Below are a few tips I've learned from dining around the island over the years.

If there’s somewhere you really want to eat, make your reservation before leaving home. I’ve found that even booking ahead doesn’t always guarantee my first choice of dates or times.
Time Dinner Around Sunset - Don't just book "dinner." Look up the sunset times for your dates and work backward. Sunset position changes throughout the year too, so not every waterfront table necessarily has a straight-on sunset view.
Request Outdoor Seating - A waterfront restaurant doesn't automatically mean your table will have a waterfront view. When making a reservation, always request outdoor or waterfront seating. It may not always be guaranteed, but it never hurts to ask.
Bring a Light Layer - Key West may be warm during the day, but sitting beside the water after sunset can feel surprisingly cool, especially when there's a breeze. I always bring a light sweater or layer if I'm planning to be outside through dinner, and almost always need it.
Don't Dismiss a Cloudy Evening - Many of the most dramatic sunsets happen when there are clouds in the sky.
Check the Dress Code - Like most beach communities, Key West is generally pretty laid-back when it comes to what to wear. However, if you're dining at one of the more upscale restaurants, it's always worth checking before you go. Latitudes, for example, requests upscale resort attire and does not allow beachwear. You don't need to dress formally, but you also don't want to arrive straight from the beach and discover you're underdressed. That’s always a terrible feeling.
Leave Time for the Sunset Celebration - If you're dining in the evening, plan your reservation around sunset—especially if you'll be near Mallory Square or Ocean Key. Give yourself enough time to enjoy the nightly Sunset Celebration, watch the street performers, browse the vendors, and take in the view before heading to dinner. I've eaten at many of the waterfront restaurants throughout Key West, but Latitudes remains one of my favorites - not just for the view, but because the entire experience begins before you even arrive.
Getting there requires a short boat ride from Key West to Sunset Key, a private 27-acre island just offshore. It's only about a seven-minute ride, but somehow those few minutes make it feel like you've left the bustle of Key West behind. As you approach the dock through pristine turquoise water and step onto the island, everything feels quieter and more secluded, with palm trees, white sand, and beautiful views across the Gulf.
For dinner, request an outdoor table around sunset if you can. Watching the sun sink over the water while dining just steps from the beach is one of those quintessential Key West experiences that's worth planning an evening around. The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch too, but sunset dinner is what I'd choose if you're only going once.

Hot Tin Roof has become one of those Key West restaurants that's especially meaningful to me. I've celebrated several special occasions here over the years, and it's a place I continue to look forward to returning to whenever I'm in Key West.
Located inside Ocean Key Resort & Spa at the end of Duval Street, the restaurant overlooks Key West Harbor and Sunset Pier. The views are beautiful at any time of day, but dinner around sunset is especially memorable. I love sitting outside on the veranda as the boats move through the harbor and the sky changes color over the water. It's upscale enough to feel special and intimate without losing the relaxed atmosphere that's unmistakably Key West.

Louie’s Backyard is one of those places that just feels like Key West. Set inside a charming old Victorian home right on the Atlantic, it has tons of character and a relaxed island atmosphere that feels a little removed from the activity around Duval Street.
You can dine indoors or outside, but for me, the whole point of coming here is to be near the water. Grab a table outside, enjoy the ocean breeze, and settle in for a meal overlooking the sea. The menu focuses on fresh seafood and island-inspired cuisine and the property features a main dining restaurant, the Afterdeck Bar, and upstairs café.

I’ve eaten at Four Flamingos many times. It's located inside Hyatt Centric Key West Resort & Spa, which is one of my favorite spots to stay in Key West - close enough to everywhere I want to be yet somehow secluded and quiet. Four Flamingos sits right along the water’s edge so you get the beautiful waterfront setting without ever having to leave the resort.
The food is fantastic with a creative, island-inspired menu that feels a little different from the more traditional seafood restaurants you'll find around Key West. And don't overlook the cocktails. They're just as creative as the food. My favorite is the Island Espresso, their tropical take on an espresso martini with cold brew, coffee liqueur, and coconut that’s fun to watch them make. It's become one of those drinks I look forward to ordering whenever I'm back.

This is one of my favorite more casual waterfront restaurants in Key West.

Think wooden picnic tables, fishing boats coming into the harbor, pelicans gliding past, and plenty of fresh seafood rather than anything fancy. The raw bar features oysters, clams, Key West pink shrimp, and other fresh seafood.
✨ Pro Tip: Half Shell doesn't take reservations. Be prepared to wait during busy periods. Happy hour is also worth checking out especially if oysters and drinks with a harbor view sound like your jam.
Conch Republic Seafood Company

Conch Republic is larger and livelier than some of the other restaurants on this list, making it a good choice when you want waterfront views without the romantic, special-occasion atmosphere of somewhere like Latitudes or Hot Tin Roof.

✨ Pro Tip: Pair lunch here with a few hours at Higgs Beach. There's no reason to dress up. This is one of those wonderfully casual Key West spots where the beach is part of the experience.

When I was there, roosters were wandering around while we ate, which somehow made the whole experience feel even more quintessentially Key West.
With the beach and ocean just beyond the restaurant, this isn't somewhere I'd go expecting a polished dining experience. It's somewhere I'd go when I want good food, an ocean breeze, and absolutely no reason to dress up.

It's especially known for its wood-fired pizzas, lobster dishes, and tropical cocktails and has a very different feel from a traditional beachfront restaurant.
✨ Pro Tip: Don't let the grand Southernmost House setting fool you. The café itself is casual. Grab a table near the water if one is available and come for the setting as much as the food.

Key West is not where I like to leave dinner plans to chance, especially when I'm trying to get an outdoor table with a view at one of the more popular or upscale restaurants. Prime spots fill up quickly, especially around sunset, so don't wait until the day of your visit if there's somewhere you really want to eat.
For places like Latitudes, where reservations are required, and popular spots like Hot Tin Roof, I make my reservations before ever leaving home. Even then, I've sometimes found my preferred dates or times are already fully booked.
Keep in mind that not every waterfront restaurant accepts reservations. Sunset Pier, for example, is first-come, first-served. For places like these, arrive early, especially if you're hoping for a waterfront table around sunset.

What you should wear to dinner in Key West really just depends on where you're dining, but in general, Key West is pretty casual.
