Fall (Late September – Early November)

Tapoco Lodge is pet friendly but only offers a limited number of pet-friendly rooms and cabins so book early. There is a $75 per pet fee. Pets must be on a leash when outside and are allowed in the outdoor dining areas. Most nearby hiking trials and Lake Santeetlah also allow dogs on leashes.

  • Prepare for Winding Mountain Roads

Many of the most popular scenic drives including Tail of the Dragon (318 curves in just 11 miles) and Cherohala Skyway have tight curves. Be careful when driving the mountain roads and if you’re prone to getting car sick, take Dramanine.

  • Dress in Layers

Tapoco Lodge is located at about 1,300 feet elevation in the mountains where weather can change quickly. Be sure to pack and dress in layers to keep comfortable.

  • Make Dinner Reservations for Tapoco Tavern

Reservations are recommended when dining at Tapoco Tavern especially during peak seasons and when there is a river release.

  • Traveling with Kids

Due to the historic nature of Tapoco Lodge, children under the age of 12 are not allowed to stay at in the lodge rooms or suites. Guests traveling with small children will need to book one of the cabins instead.

  • Time Your Visit Around River Releases

Multiple times throughout the year, water is released from the dam upstream from the lodge, dramatically increasing the flow of the Cheoah River at Tapoco.

The river can go from calm to fast and powerful in a short amount of time.

This is a fun and lively time to plan your visit as whitewater kayakers make their way downstream right in front of the lodge. Be sure to make a lunch reservation at Tapoco Tavern on a release date when you can gather with other visitors to watch. Kayakers typically start making their way down between 11 am and noon.

Note that river releases will also impact activities like fly fishing, making conditions challenging during higher flows so plan accordingly.

A Brief History of Tapoco Lodge

The history of Tapoco Lodge is quite interesting. It was originally owned by the Tallassee Power Company to house workers which is where its name is derived - TAllassee POwer COmpany.

The lodge itself was built in the 1930s by The Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA) who had aquired the property. It served as a retreat for ALCOA executives overseeing the nearby hydroelectric operations. During World War II, that power system was critical for aluminum production for aircrafts which meant extra security measures had to be taken and an underground bomb shelter was constructed on the property in anticipation of potential air raids.

Today, subtle remnants of that history still exist if you know where to look. My flyfishing guide actually pointed this out to me although Tapoco offers History Talks. There are small windows set into the ground near the main lodge lawn, almost completely hidden, that once served as chutes people could slide down during an air raid into the emergency underground bunker below.

Over the years following WWII, the property gradually expanded and changed ownership hands several times. In the 1950s, the property amenities like the theater and guardhouse were added. In the 1990s, a tennis court and gazebos were built.

However, all of these modern additions remain true to the property’s historic roots and in 2004, Tapoco was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places ensuring that remains the case as it continues to grow.
