Location

Cooper Pines cabin is nestled in the Daniel Boone National Forest off a gravel road in Campton, Kentucky. It is located just minutes from the iconic Red River Gorge with all of its breathtaking arches and unique geological features that make it a world renown destination for hikers and rock climbing.

The cabin is close to several metropolitan areas and airports. It’s just two hours from Louisville, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio, and a little over four hours east of Nashville.

Know Before You Go

Below are some important things to know before visiting Cooper Pines that will help make your trip more enjoyable so you can focus your time making lifetime memories with family and friends.

  • Cooper Pines has 3 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms.

  • The master, downstairs bedroom has a King bed. The two upstairs bedrooms both have queen beds and are on different levels, one of which is a spacious loft.

  • The cabin is on Eastern Standard Time.

  • There is 24-hour check in.

  • Small dogs are allowed.

  • There is no Uber, Lyft or taxi service nearby so plan on driving to the places you want to explore.

  • Groceries can be purchased at Save A Lot located at 719 KY-15 S. in Campton.

  • There is no need to overpack. The cabin is equipped with a state of the art washer and dryer, and laundry pods and dryer sheets are provided.

Climate & Weather

  • Cooper Pines sits at an elevation of approximately 960 feet.

  • The Gorge has 4 distinct seasons so plan your visit accordingly.

  • Summer and spring are the wettest months and humidity can be high especially in summer.

  • Spring blooms at the Gorge are beautiful with vibrant wildflowers and lush green foliage.

  • Summer temperatures hover in the mid to high 80s so if you are visiting in the summer, plan outdoor activities in the early mornings and late afternoons when conditions are more enjoyable.

  • Fall is one of the prettiest times to visit. The air is crisp and cool, and the Gorge comes to life in vibrant autumnal colors as the foliage turns to shades of crimson and gold.

  • Winter highs average only about 45 degrees and temperatures can get below freezing, but the Gorge becomes a true winter wonderland with snow-covered trees and frozen waterfalls this time of year.

  • If you plan on hiking and spending extended time outdoors, I suggest visiting in late spring (April/May) or early fall (September/October).

  • If you plan on climbing, visit in late spring through early fall when conditions are optimal.

The main cabin living space is an open-air design with high ceilings and natural light. Seating includes an extremely comfortable couch with two large chairs providing ample room for everyone.

A spiral staircase accents the room leading up to the other two levels of the home where you will find two of the bedrooms.

There is also a separate dining area in the living space with a farm house table that seats four.

BEDROOMS

Cooper Pines has 3 large bedrooms.  The downstairs bedroom serves as the master bedroom with a King-size bed, very large closet and doors to the main back patio. There is also a bathroom located directly across the hall.

The second bedroom is found upstairs on the second level and also has its own bathroom and patio. It has a queen bed and a private patio. There is also a seating area located right outside the bedroom doors that is perfect for relaxing or sipping tea while getting lost in a good book.

The third bedroom is a quaint loft nestled up on the third floor at the peak of the A-frame of the cabin with a queen bed and large picture windows that allow natural light to flood in during the golden hour each day.

The cabin has not shortage of outdoor living space. There is a front patio with wooden chairs to relax in as well as two back patios. The downstairs back patio offers ample seating, a BBQ grill and hot tub. There is also a private fire pit with six Adirondack chairs located off to the side of the house.  

The stargazing from all of these locations is fantastic and you can catch the sunset out back in the evenings.

Cooper Pines offers a great outdoor area with a Solo Stove fire pit and six Adirondack chairs. If you’ve never experienced a Solo Stove before, you’re in for a treat. They put off more heat than a typical wood burning fire and do so with little to no smoke.

Regardless of whether you decide to relax on one of the patios or around the fire, you will no doubt marvel at the dark night skies at Cooper Pines as a canopy of stars blankets the heavens above.

Things to Do Nearby

Red River Gorge is an outdoor playground full of rugged cliffs and natural bridges that is world renowned for its rock climbing. However, you don’t have to be a climber to appreciate its beauty. You can experience its incredible terrain through scenic drives, hiking and mountain bike trails, and its waterways where you can kayak, paddle board, fish and swim. You can spend time soaring the skies on a  Zip line, playing a round of miniature golf or visiting the Reptile Zoo.  In the winter, you can cross-country ski and snowshoe.

  • The Gorge Underground – One-of-a-kind kayak, SUP and boat tours where you can experience underground caves lit up in unique colors.

  • Reptile Zoo - Kid friendly zoo with the largest collection of venomous snakes in the world.

  • Natural Bridge State Resort Park - Home to a 78-foot tall, 65-foot high natural sandstone arch where you can hike, swim, fish, canoe, kayak, pedal boat, picnic, visit the Historic Nature Center, and ride a sky lift.

Recommended Hikes:

Red River Gorge is home to a number of hiking trails that cater to every fitness level.

  • Natural Bridge Trail –  1.5 mile easy hike to the famous bridge at Natural Bridge State Resort Park. 

  • Whittleton Arch – 2.5 mile out-and-back, easy hike to the Gorge’s largest arch by mass which spans 44 feet across and 14 feet high.

  • Chimney Top Trial – 1.8 mile easy, scenic hike that takes you to an overlook towering 400 feet above the Red River. A spot that is often considered to be the best view in the Gorge.

  • Pilot Knob State Preserve – 1.3 mile, moderate hike to the top of the preserve with a 750-foot elevation gain.

  • Double Arch/Star Gap Arch/Arch of Triumph – 5.6 mile, unmarked moderate hike.

  • Double Arch, Courthouse Rock and Auxier Loop= often considered the best hike - a moderate loop with over a 1,000-foot elevation gain that takes approx. 3 hours.

  • Indian Staircase and Indian Arch – 3.5 mile unmarked, difficult hike.
