TABLE OF CONTENTS

HISTORY OF TABLE MOUNTAIN INN

Golden, Colorado was founded in 1859, during the gold rush of Pike’s Peak. Surprisingly however, it did not derive its name from the precious golden ore discovered nearby, but rather it was named for Thomas Golden, an early settler and prospector.

Located in the heart of town is Table Mountain Inn, a hotel with an interesting history. You see, surprisingly, the town did not have a hotel for visitors until 1925, when The Hotel Berrimoor opened its doors featuring a coffee shop and 32 rooms. Business was booming until the Great Depression hit closing the establishment down in the 1930s.

This led to entrepreneur Edgar Sparks purchasing the property and renaming it the Cody Hotel in honor of William “Buffalo Bill” Cody, who is buried on top of Lookout Mountain in Golden. This did not last long though as the town could not support a hotel and it closed.

Then in 1948, Lu Holland, the Mayor of Golden, reopened the hotel naming it the Holland House. This venture lasted until Holland decided to retire in the early 1980s, and it once again closed its doors. Fast forward to 1991. A group of successful local businessmen were enjoying coffee across the street from the hotel and began discussing the possibility of reopening it and adding a restaurant and lobby.

They purchased the property and began an extensive remodel of the 32 rooms renaming it Table Mountain Inn. Things were booming for the next several years. So, in 1999, they added on another 42 rooms. Along with this came guest parking, event space, and the main attraction, Table Mountain Grill & Cantina which literally has the best food in town bringing in hotel guests and locals alike.

100 years later and after changing names a few times, Table Mountain Inn is a fixture in town, anchoring the heart of downtown Golden at the end of Washington Street, the town’s main road.

Getting There

Golden is located about 12-15 miles west of Denver, Colorado. Yet, it feels like a world away given its laidback mountain town vibe. It rests at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains along Clear Creek which flows through the heart of the city.

Closest Airport: Denver International Airport (DEN) is the closest airport located about 45 minutes from Golden. This is the most convenient (and only reasonable) airport to fly into when visiting.

Driving Directions: Golden is located off Interstate-70 approximately 45 minutes from Denver Airport, approximately 1-1/2 hours from Vail, and 3-1/2 hours from Aspen. From the airport, you can generally take Peña Boulevard to the I-70 West. Use the right lanes to take the exit toward CO-58 West, and get off at Exit 1A which takes you onto Washington Avenue which is Golden’s proverbial “Main Street” and the street on which Table Mountain Inn is located.

From Vail or Aspen, take I-70 East instead. Take the exit towards US-6 W/6th Avenue/Boulder from CO-470W. Follow that into the heart of town to Washington and 12th Street.

The weather in Golden is moderate compared to other nearby mountain towns that sit at higher elevations. Average sunshine is close to 300 days a year, which makes it an ideal outdoor activities destination for

TABLE MOUNTAIN GRILL & CANTINA

Table Mountain Grill & Cantina literally has some of the best Mexican food I’ve ever had. In fact, it’s almost always packed with not just hotel guests but Golden locals. Something that is very rare in the hotel restaurant industry. Perfectly crafted cocktails are well made by expert staff behind the bar, and they have two happy hours daily on weekdays including a late night version. I especially loved the margaritas which were not very sweet, just the way I like them.

Interestingly, Table Mountain Grill & Cantina is only one of 10 locations that serve Barnum Pilsner Coors on tap, properly known as “Barmen Pilsner.” This makes sense because Coors is brewed in Golden. However, I did not fully comprehend the significance of this at first.

Barnum Pilsner is a unique German-style Pilsner named after the birthplace of Adolph Coors, the Founder of Coors Brewing, and production is extremely limited to only 20 barrels per month. Restaurants serving it on tap must follow traditional German methods of pouring. First, it can only be served in a Barmen-branded pilsner glass, Second, it requires a full “seven-minute poor,” a technique that creates a thick, creamy head of foam on the beer essential to the “experience.” And yes, it truly takes seven minutes!

MEETING SPACE

Table Mountain Inn offers over 5,000 square feet of meeting space including large conference rooms and a downstairs area with a private terrace that can accommodate up to 200 guests. You can also host a private event at the Table Mountain Grill & Cantina.

William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody was an iconic figure of the Wild West who led a fascinating life. He left home at a young age to herd cattle and drive wagons across the great plains. He went on to fur trapping, gold mining, and even joined an early version of the Pony Express before going off to the Civil War.

After the war, he went on to scout for the army and hunted for railroad workers which earned him the nickname “Buffalo Bill”. Through his journeys, he met a dime novelist Ned Buntline who began writing stories that made him a household name and a legend. Buntline’s drama Scouts of the Prairie also launched his career in show business when he performed live on stage in 1872.

From here, Buffalo Bill became the most popular showman around and in 1882, the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show was born which ran for approximately 30 years until 1913. Performances took place all over the US, Europe, and other locations shaping how America’s Wild West was perceived in the minds of people everywhere.
