A Symphony of Spring

There are few places where you can experience the vibrant beauty of the spring blooms quite like Cheekwood Estate & Gardens in Nashville. With over 55 acres of gardens, spring has sprung in a symphony of color as 250,000 blooming bulbs have come to life.

ESTATE TOUR

The Cheekwood Estate’s name was derived from combining the last names of its owners Leslie Cheek, Sr. and Mabel Wood who met on a train in 1895, and married shortly thereafter.

Built on the highest point on the property between 1929 and 1932, the historic estate was designed by architect Bryant Fleming in the fashion of the great country estates in Britain. It was decorated with items from dealers in England such as the fireplace surrounds, doors, chandeliers, and library paneling.

Today, you can take a self-guided tour of the mansion to learn more about its history as well as its design and construction. It also features an art gallery and panoramic views of the surrounding gardens and downtown Nashville.

Ties to Coffee

Leslie Cheek, Sr. made much of his fortune through investment in the Cheek-Neal Coffee Company owned by Joel Cheek, his father’s cousin and creator of the Maxwell House Coffee Blend. The success of the brand skyrocketed after President Theodore Roosevelt exclaimed, it was “good to the last drop.”

Its newly found popularity caught the attention of the Postum Company who then purchased the company for a substantial sum in 1928. This left Leslie Cheek, Sr. with a good portion of the money he needed to build the estate.

UPCOMING EVENTS

• Spring Tea - Table side, seasonal tea service with treats on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays now through April 10.

• Great Spring Art Hop - A fun filled holiday event taking place on April 18 and 19. With 48 egg hunts, it is guaranteed fun for kids of all ages as they search for 36,000 treat-filled hidden eggs. There will also be a scavenger hunt for bunny murals, food trucks, and live music.

• Dogs & Dogwoods - A weekend event taking place April 26-27, in tandem with Arbor Day. Bring your dogs and enjoy dog vendors, food trucks and live music in the Beer Garden. The first 500 visitors even get to take home a Dogwood Tree.

CHEEKWOOD TRAINS

Cheekwood features an enchanted garden inspired by The Little Engine That Could full of charming miniature dioramas and a train station. Children will be fascinated and delighted as they watch the trains chugging down over 1,000 feet of track that overlap and pass through the trees. They can run alongside the engines making their way full steam ahead through a maze of walkways paving the way through this magical forest land, across a walking bridge, and through miniature tunnels.

THE MASTERPIECE ART SERIES

Cheekwood has had a long standing commitment to bringing world-renowned works of art to Nashville for all to enjoy.

To that end, you can find the pop art masterpiece American LOVE on loan, sitting proudly on display on the lawn in front of the Estate, now through November 2.

In 1964, Robert Indiana’s LOVE, with its signature slanted “O” first appeared on the artist’s holiday cards to friends. A year later, The Museum of Modern Art in New York selected it to be featured on their official holiday card. Since then, it’s become a cultural icon with over 50 editions of the sculpture created for sites around the world from New York City to Singapore. It was even released as a postage stamp in Philadelphia, the “City of Brotherly Love,” on January 1973, just in time for Valentine’s Day
